USPA NEWS - President Emmanuel Macron has just started the first sequence of D-Day commemorations which this year marks the 80th anniversary of June 6, 1944, when France was liberated from the Nazis during WWII.
Many veterans have already died, eighty years later, but some centenarians are still alive, resistant and still strongly involved in the commemorations that take place each year, between the USA and the Normandy region, through which, 73,000 American soldiers liberated France.
President Macron began this morning with his arrival in Morbihan, in Brittany, in Plumelec where he is going and participating in the ceremony of tribute to the Breton resistance fighters at the SAS (the resistance fighters) memorial. Achille Muller, one of the veterans of the last paratroopers, will also deliver (an exception to the usual protocol) a short 2-minute speech entitled “the ghosts of my youth” in homage to his brothers in arms who died in combat, there is already eighty years old. “Here fell the first soldier of the Landings, a French soldier,” said Head of State Macron in the preamble to his speech.
During the same morning, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, for his part, welcomed the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, landing at the Orly Pavilion of Honor at 9:30 a.m.
The American head of state arrives in France for D-Day, followed by a state visit, during a five-day trip.

ARRIVAL OF PRESIDENT MACRON IN PLUMELEC, BRITANY AT NOON

President Macron, as head of the Armed Forces, arrived at 11:53 a.m. at Plumelec in Morbihan (Brittany) and took part in the ceremony paying tribute to the Breton resistance fighters at the SAS memorial.
Upon his arrival, President Macron even before meeting the veterans and families where he greeted the officials the Chief of Staff, the general and the general, Patricia Miralles, Secretary of State for Veterans as well as the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Yves Le Drian, also (Former President of the Brittany region).
President Emmanuel Macron gave a short tweny-minute (20) speech, as well as laying a wreath of flowers, with Colonel Achille Muller, veteran, and ended his speech with “Long live Brittany, long live the Republic, long live France!” », before joining veteran Achille Muller, for his stroll and to greet the resistance fighters and veterans, and soldiers from the first PIMA regiment.
The song of the partisans, "Friend, do you hear the black flight of the crows on our plains?" the most symbolic song of the French resistance fighters of WWII, was performed by a dozen young schoolgirls from the Cham class of the Jules-Simon college in Valves.

President Emmanuel Macron and his wife were then treated to another lovely little performance from a group of schoolgirls singing "Douce France", one of the most patriotic songs, by Charles Trenet.

The choice of Plumelec, a highly symbolic place of the Breton Resistance, where the first American soldier died, to come and liberate France on the night of June 5 to 6, 1944, around forty French paratroopers from the 4th Special Air Service (SAS) battalion were dropped in Brittany. Two of these four groups landed at Plumelec to find and assess the state of the Breton Resistance.
Colonel, Achille Muller, aged 99, wearing this Amaranthe beret from the Special Forces Regiment, unique among the paratroopers, honors his brothers in arms and pays tribute to other veterans.

The President of the Republic, who launched the start of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary, began a three-day memorial journey, this morning Wednesday June 5, 2024 in Brittany, from the Landings in Normandy to Saint-Lô (Manche) then to Caen (Calvados ). After Saint Lo, President Macron is expected at 4 p.m. in the main courtyard of the Saint-Lô stud farm where he presided over a ceremony in tribute to the civilian victims of the war. Then it is planned that the head of state will go to the old prison of Caen to pay tribute to the 80 resistance fighters shot by the Gestapo in this enclosure on June 6, 1944.
