USPA NEWS - The French president Emmanuel Macron opened, Monday in Paris, the 4th edition of the "One Planet Summit" devoted in 2021 to biodiversity, with the objective of relaunching a green diplomacy put on hold by the COVID-19, a pandemic which precisely illustrates the dangers of environmental disturbances. The 4th edition of the "One Planet Summit" is dedicated to the challenges of protecting biodiversity, and held this Monday, January 11, at the Elysee Palace, This Summit brought together heads of state and government, as well as leaders of international organizations, financial institutions, the economic sector and NGOs, all ready to accelerate international action in favor of nature and make concrete commitments to fight against the loss of biodiversity. We publish the full statement of the French Elysee Administration over the meeting, held in Elysee Palace. Some concrete acts have been decided around the 4 themes of the Summit.
1) AGRO-ECOLOGY: MORE THAN € 10 BN FOR THE ACCELERATOR OF THE GREAT GREEN WALL IN SAHEL - The Great Green Wall Accelerator (GGW Accelerator) is a multi-stakeholder initiative to harmonize and catalyze the efforts of all partners for the development of the Sudano-Sahelian strip, through the dissemination of agroecological practices. She wishes to give new impetus to this ambitious African initiative, launched in the 1980s, to green the Sahel. The initiative's various partners have pledged to mobilize $ 14.3 billion in international funding in the 11 countries concerned by 2025. More than a hundred companies, grouped around the IAM AFRICA (International Agroecological Movement for Africa) charter have committed to contributing to the implementation of agro-ecological transition objectives in GGW countries. 2) PROTECTION OF TERRESTRIAL AND MARINE ECOSYSTEMS : MORE THAN FIFTY STATES MOBILIZED FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTED AREAS ----------------------------------------- The Coalition of High Ambition for Nature and Peoples, co-chaired by France and Costa Rica, intends to create the political conditions for the adoption of an ambitious target for the protection of nature in the future global framework for biodiversity, to be adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2021. 50 states have signed up to this coalition to protect 30% of the planet (land and sea) by 2030. The Coalition for an Exemplary Mediterranean Sea in 2030 will be launched by Spain, France and the Principality of Monaco at the One Planet Summit. Built around 4 commitments: (1) develop a network of protected areas; (2) end overfishing; (3) fight marine pollution and end single-use plastic; (4) greening maritime transport. 3) FINANCE MOBILIZE COMPANIES ASSET MANAGERS AND PUBLIC DONORS FOR THE PROTECTION OF BIODIVERSITY---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Alliance for Investment in Natural Capital, announced by HRH the Prince of Wales at PAHO, will bring together finance players looking to increase their investments in biodiversity restoration. Its founders, HSBC Pollination Climate Asset Management, Lombard Odier and Moriva, aim to mobilize $ 10 billion for nature in the next two years. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) is an initiative led by public and private actors, including some fifty leading financial institutions and supported in particular by the British and French governments. It will develop a framework for measuring the risks, impacts and benefits of economic activities in terms of biodiversity, in order to be able to establish transparency frameworks for companies and financial institutions.----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Coalition for the Convergence of Financing for Climate and Biodiversity wishes to build more synergies between climate action and preservation of the biosphere. Its members will work to increase the share of their climate finance that also benefits biodiversity, to reach at least 30% by 2030. 4)PROTECT FORESTS SPECIES AND HUMAN HEALTH----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The PREZODE initiative (PREventing ZOonotic Diseases Emergence) will establish unprecedented international cooperation between research actors and health vigilance networks for the prevention of new pandemics from animal reservoirs. Launched by France, with the support of the FAO, in consultation with many European research players, it is already mobilizing more than 400 researchers and players in human, animal and environmental health at the international level. The One Planet Summit was an opportunity to take stock of the Alliance for the Preservation of Tropical Forests. Announced at the 2019 G7, it is now ready to operate and expand to states that have expressed support for it. Germany and the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced joining the alliance on the occasion of PAHO. Source : Elysee
