UPDATE 2 -- F1 champion Michael Schumacher in coma after ski accident

USPA News - Retired German racing driver Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in Formula One history, was in a coma Sunday after suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident in southeastern France, hospital officials said. He remains in a critical condition.

The accident happened at about 11:07 a.m. local time on Sunday while Schumacher, 44, was skiing with his family on the slopes of the French Alps in Meribel. First responders were at the scene within eight minutes before he was airlifted to a hospital in the nearby town of Moutiers while still conscious. But Schumacher`s condition worsened and he was taken to the University Hospital in Grenoble, where he arrived at 12:40 p.m. "He suffered a serious head injury with coma on his arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical intervention. He remains in a critical condition," the hospital said in a press statement late on Sunday, ending hours of uncertainty. A statement from Schumacher`s management confirmed the information, but provided no new information. "We ask for understanding that we cannot give continuous information about his health," his spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said earlier, adding that the retired racing legend was wearing a helmet and that no other persons were involved in his fall. Schumacher, with 90 wins, 68 pole positions, 75 fastest laps, 1354 points and seven world titles, is regarded by many as the greatest Formula One driver of all time. He first retired after winning the 2006 Italian Grand Prix but returned to Formula One in February 2010, only to retire for a second time after finishing in 14th position at the Brazilian Grand Prix in November 2012.
